Cooking & Camping

Led by Ms. Flanagan and the Spanish class, CP students spent Monday mid-morning at Verde's Mexican Parrilla learning all about Spanish cuisine from Chef Cody.

Chef Cody demonstrates how to use the molcajete.

The students paired up into groups, and were given a cutting board, a knife, their own molcajete, and a variety of salsa and guacamole ingredients including fire-roasted tomatoes, jalapeños, garlic, onion, seasoning salt, limes, and avocado. After a short speech on the importance of knife safety, it was time to get grinding!

Brennan, Hannah, Loli, and Callie dice and mix their ingredients

And finally, lunch was served -- taco fixings to be topped off with their unique salsa and guacamole creations!

After the cooking demonstration, the middle school students piled into two vans and headed for the Pedernales River for two nights of camping with Ms. Carol and Mr. Rutherford.

A few words from the campers:
We are here. We survived the night! No one has gotten lost. No snakes or large critters have attacked anyone. Heart brand burgers were amazing! Although the ghost stories were pretty terrifying, we actually slept...in tents...on the river.
This morning we cooked eggs and bacon on the grill! Then we had the obligatory after breakfast s'mores.
Next we tackle the big swimming hole and tube the other side of the falls!
