What Does It Take To Be Noticed By College Coaches?

There is a lot of talent out there.  There are a lot of players who want a shot at college tennis.  And there are a lot more players than there are spots on the teams.

I recently visited with several college coaches and listened to what they had to say about what they are consistently looking for in their recruits. From these conversations and ones from previous years, I compiled the following list of desirable traits:

1) Rankings and significant wins against players with similar profiles on their current roster
2) Technical and tactical skill
3) Potential and desire to further develop as an athlete
4) Intelligent shot selection and ability to craft a point
5) Attitude and resilience
6) Discipline and work ethic
7) Ability to lead teammates by positive example.

In addition to this short list of attributes, I was particularly moved by the following quotes:

"No one player on the team is more important that another. We want some tough, committed individuals... players who are ready to take the team to the next level."   ~Adam Schaechterle, Notre Dame
"I want a player that plays with no fear... and has the belief that he can compete and win immediately in his freshman year."   ~Michael Center, University of Texas
"We are looking for the right guy who can build team chemistry on a great, fun team."  ~Steve Denton, Texas A&M University

Winning matches is the best way to get the first look.  Your discipline and dedication will keep them looking.  But it is your attitude, resilience, and 'coach-ability' that will make them a true fan.

Good Luck... and PLAY ON!
